HeySoHi.com - A new community-based popularity website for social network profiles

Late Friday night, I was searching for random domain names and came across heysohi.com, which was available. I have played my fair share of Warcraft, and its one of the stupid things people say in that game ‘heysohi’ instead of just ‘hi’. Anyways, it’s kinda catchy, even if it sounds silly, so I figured I would register the .com.

So now I am sitting there thinking about what I can do with my new domain name, and it hits me:

Digg for MySpace & Facebook profiles.

Then I think why limit it to MySpace & Facebook, there are many social networks out there? So I have started to add more categories. hi5, orkut, Twitter, Yelp!, LinkedIn, etc. More can be added as the popularity of the site climbs. I plan on adding sub-categories as well. Music, Movies, Television Shows, and much more.

Let me explain this idea in a little more detail for those who are not familiar with digg.com: Digg is a site where users submit news stories from websites and blogs. The community at digg.com then votes on the stories being submitted. If a given story gets enough votes, it becomes ‘popular’ and goes to the front page of whatever category it is in, if it becomes very popular, it will show up on the front page of digg.com. Basically, the digg community decides what is news-worthy, and what other digg users might want to read. HeySoHi.com takes the same concept and applies it to profile pages on social networks. If a profile is worthy of your vote, it will get a point, if the profile gets enough points, it will move up to the first page.

This is a chance for those who frequent social networks to check out some of the coolest sites on MySpace and FaceBook as voted by other users. A profile could get submitted to HeySoHi for any reason: good photos, cool layout, great music, famous friends…the list goes on. It can also be useful to see what music is hot right now!

From HeySoHi.com you can discuss any profile that has been submitted, adding to the community element of the site.

HeySoHi.com is still in ‘alpha’ phase right now, so it may not always function as intended, and the site design is bare-bones. I have done very little to customize the site so far, I have been putting the last few days into developing the idea. The site is functional right now, but only on a very basic level.

There is much more to come as the site is further developed.

  • Custom Button to place on profile pages that allow vote casting directly from one’s profile.
  • Sub-Categories
  • More Social Networks to be added
  • Logo Development
  • Site customization - Full site redesign

…and much more…it just hasn’t come to me yet.

I really think this could be huge…if anyone out there has any insight or knowledge they wish to share regarding this venture, I am all ears. I am admittedly not a frequent MySpace or Facebook user, although I do have profiles on both sites. I think I could benefit from speaking with a few users from each site to get an idea of what it will take to make HeySoHi.com a success with the social network user base.

I think this idea could reach millions of people relatively fast, if the site is developed and marketed correctly.

Your feedback is welcome on this idea, I would really like to see what people think and if they would use the site.
