Why Toolbar PageRank is Important

There are certain places on the internet where people will tell you that Toolbar PageRank ‘means nothing’. That is simply a false statement.

I think Toolbar PageRank has a great deal of meaning and value, even if it isn’t necessarily the same as real PageRank.

The value of Google’s Toolbar PageRank:

  • It is based on real PageRank - TBPR (Toolbar PageRank) is at least based on Google’s real PageRank. Matt Cutts said “Roughly every 3-4 months we take a snapshot of PageRank values and export them so that the new values are visible in the Google Toolbar.” Not every site’s TBPR is hand-edited, I would guess a very very small percentage of sites have their TBPR hand-edited.
  • At a glance, it gives a site ‘internet credibility’ - If a site is more than a year old the domain has ‘NA/10′ or ‘0/10′ TBPR , it tells me something is wrong. I would be less inclined to do business with that site.
  • It can mean ad revenue for your site - If an advertiser comes across your site and sees you have decent TBPR, they may approach you about doing business with less hesitation.
  • It can indicate a sites ability to rank in the SERPs - Most of the top results for any given keyword have at least some TBPR… coincidence? I think not.

I don’t understand why people claim that Toolbar PageRank ‘means nothing’. If your site or your client’s site TBPR drops from a five to a zero, I would say there is cause for concern, even with no immediate decrease, let alone an increase in traffic (I wonder if the traffic is coming from search engines? It is not mentioned). Things that make you go hmmmm…..

I think your last statement about SERP and PR is not 100% true. Personally, I think SERP is not directly affected by the PR. SERP is primary based on the relevant keywords and the weight of the keywords used in the title, meta, description and content of the page. It’s almost has nothing to do with the PR.

You can have a page with NO PR (Not even ZERO PR) at the #1 spot on certain search keywords. I have done so many times on page without PR with some high ranking keywords.

Personally, I believe PR is just another marketing tools created by Google. It’s a hype. :-)

I was careful to leave room for this in my statement in saying “Most of the top results for any given keyword…”

I agree with you that it is possible to rank for keywords without pagerank, however, most of the top results will contain some pagerank for any competitive keyword.

    Thanks for stopping by!

sorry guys, I had a really bad day on friday, as my wife and the kids.. oh well let’s leave it like this.

jim: you are absolutely right with the majority of your points.

I just didn’t like “It can mean ad revenue for your site - If an advertiser comes across your site and sees you have decent TBPR, they may approach you about doing business with less hesitation.”

whenever I hear “ad revenue for your site” [I can barely write it..] I get this hot flush that is running from my head trough my spine directly into my bottom and set’s my ass on fire.

    sorry.

keep up the good work. don’t use yahoo.

I think there is a reason google keeps it out there. To catch people who try to manipulate rankings.but a good pagerank doesn’t mean that the page is good too…

    Hi ,

I think page rank is one of the important factor in google ranking algorithm. Some pages with a zero pr do come in top results but they are there just for a little time.Good pr sites always rank good in serp if all other factor are taken constant for a considerable long time.

If you look for high serp alwys work on your KPI as well as PR.Take me you will alwys be on top… :)
